Item descriptions

Item database – item designation format

Items in the database are to be designated unambiguously according to the following order of priority:

  1. Designation according to national or international standard, e.g. Hexagonal hole screw ISO 4762 M4 x 60 - 8.8
  2. Neutral designation that is unambiguous without reference to a standard or manufacturer, e.g.
    O-ring 4.5 x 1.5 FPM/Fluor
  3. Manufacturer’s designation, e.g.
    Filter cartridge Arlon TXX 12 – 10

Item designation – detail specification

The following terms, in named order, constitute the components in an item’s unambiguous designation for business transactions:

  • Designation e.g. Filter cartridge
  • Company name e.g. Arlon
  • Reference designation e.g. TXX 12 - 10

When necessary to obtain an unambiguous designation within the scope of the SKC system then the item’s designation can be supplemented by a large number of additional characters.

Note that the designations for items that are “company/make-related” are to use the designations assigned by the manufacturer/originator. In other words, not the designation created by the agent/reseller. (Exceptions can be granted in certain cases.)

Each item in the item database is to have, along with an unambiguous designation of origin, information on what type of product is to be purchased/delivered. A packaging description is to be included when necessary.

When items are assigned designations, based primarily on information provided by the suppliers, and entered in the database by SSG’s secretariat they are also assigned a unique item number (SKC number). This is the number that represents the forest industry’s common identification and is of great importance in, for example, increasing the efficiency of business transactions between the buyer and seller. This is particularly important in the trend towards electronic commerce.
